ローマ皇帝Marcus Aureliusは戦争と政治に疲れた 。皇帝は軍隊の将軍Maximusに自分の後継者になってくれと伝え、その折には政治の腐敗を根絶し、権力を人々に返還するようにと頼む。その後不運にも、 Marcusは変死をとげる。Maximusは重傷を負いながらも何とか生き伸びる。そして彼は奴隷として捕まるはめとなる。彼の存続の唯一の方法はgladiatorとして戦い続けて、大衆の心を引きつけることだ。
A Roman emperor Marcus Aurelius is tired of war and politics. So he asks his army general, Maximus, to be his successor and then to end the corruption and give the power back to the people. Unfortunately, Marcus mysteriously dies. Maximus, though seriously injured, somehow manages to live. And he becomes a slave. The only way of his survival is to keep fighting as a gladiator and to win the hearts of the crowed.
