Age of Empires III: The WarChiefs & Campaign Walktrhoughs

Before you start, you may want to read the following tips:

  1. To get food, hunt wild animals when you can.  Villagers get food by hunting faster than farming or picking berries.
  2. Generate villagers continuously.  Villagers are the engines of growth.  Don't stop creating villagers.
  3. Use Docks to get food if there are fish.  While a town center is in transition, you cannot generate villagers.  But you can create fishing boats at Docks.
  4. Use war vessels to attack ground units when you can.  Ground units have weak pierce armors.
  5. Use hot keys effectively.  Use hot keys to find Town Center (Command + C), Dock (Command + D), Market (Command + M), Farm (Command + I), War Hut (W) and so forth.
  6. Attack enemy's base early before they come to yours.  If you don't destroy their economy, they will come strike you again.
  7. Take one villager or more when you go to raid enemy's base so that they can build war compounds at the destination.
  8. When there is a town center, build a market at first so that you can research technologies.

Walkthroughs: Act I

Go to Walkthroughs: Act II >>

ACT I: 1. War Dance
Difficulty: Easy

Kanyenke and Nathaniel arrive at at the Oneida Iroquois village.  There are two tribes up in the north, the Mohawk tribe (Orange) at northeast and the Seneca tribe (Red) at northwest.  They will try to enter the village across the river once in a while.  Senecan warriors will often try to assault your villagers. So you may want to have some men stationed at the center of map.

The first thing you need to do when you start out at the village is to build a dock, which you will use to produce fishing boats and war canoes in Fortress Age (III).  Also, build a market for technologies.  (See Screenshot 01-03.)  Generate villagers and have them cut trees so that you can build fishing boats.  Send some villagers to a mine and also have them hunt animals for food.  (See Screenshot 01-02.)

Advanced to the Fortress Age as fast as you can.  During the transition period, shift villagers to gold mines and trees so that you can produce war canoes soon.  Villagers can now quit hunting animals because you should have many fishing boats by now.  As soon as you enter the Fortress Age, produce war canoes.  Remember the hot keys for Dock (Command + D) and War Canoe (W).  Send first several war canoes to the west entrance across the river so that you can stop Senecan warriors from entering your village.  (See Screenshot 01-05.)  Keep producing war canoes until you reach the maximum number allowed.  Send also some war canoes to the east entrance so that you can stop Mohawk warriors from entering the village at least until you are ready for a raid.  (See Screenshot 01-06.)

Next, prepare yourself to raid the Mahawk village.  Build a siege workshop and produce a couple of artilleries.  (See Screenshot 01-04.)  Get some Tomahawk warriors (Z) out of war huts (Command + W).  If you have a Travois, you may want to take it when you go raid the Mohawk village.  (See Screenshot 01-07.)  You can use it to build a war hut at the destination.

ACT I: 2. The Rescue
Difficulty: Easy

The village is empty, and all the villagers are in captivity.  You can either go north or east around the pond at the center of the map.  It will be easier if you go east because that's where the Hessians (Green) have their main base.  So let's go east.

There are a couple of mines near your base.  And there are wolves watching a dangled Inuit scout.  (See Screenshot 02-02.)  You can save and use him for reconnaissance.

There are a couple of Hessian gates in this map.  You will be stopped by a gate if you go east.  (See Screenshot 02-03.)  If you cross the gate, there are a couple of prisons right ahead and also to the east.  Let's save the prisoners right ahead across the gate.  (See Screenshot 02-04.)  Then go back to your base with them because you will soon have visitors with an artillery.  (See Screenshot 02-05.)

Age of Empires III: The WarChiefs for Mac

Screenshot 02-01

Let's stay at the base and develop the economy.  You should advance to the next stage, Fortress Age (III), so that you can produce war canoes.  (See Screenshot 02-06.)  Produce 3 of them. Use them to attack the foes at the center of the pond.  (See Screenshot 02-07.)  There are 3 prisons that war canoes can reach.  Use them only to destroy the one at the center of the pond.  There is one war canoe that belongs to the other Indian tribe, so you need to destroy it.  Also attack their fishing boats and also their dock.  (See Screenshot 02-08.)  Then let your war canoes rest.

Next, it's time to release prisoners in the southeast.  You don't want to use the entire army to attack prison guards, or the Hessians will sneak out of the gate and reach your base.  You have three guys (Kanyenke, Nathaniel Black and Wind Feather) who have the sniper shot ability.  So get these guys to sniper-shoot the prison guards and save villagers.  (See Screenshot 02-09.)  There is enemy's war canoe right behind this prison.  So be careful.  Just use artilleries to destroy it easily and quickly if necessary.

Okay, there are a lot of guards by a trading post right ahead.  After killing them, have Nathaniel Black rebuild a trading post.  (See Screenshot 02-10.)  And you will get experience points plus one villager each time a wagon passes.

Move along the carriage path, and there is another prison.  There are a lot of guards.  And you can use war canoes to get their attention.  (See Screenshot 02-13.)  Attack them with war canoes at first and then let the main military join the battle.

Finally, you have to face the Hessian base to the east.  (See Screenshot 02-12.)  And it won't be difficult to destroy it.  Use the last group of prisoners or villagers brought by the trading carriage to build war compounds including war huts and stables so that you won't run out of foot soldiers during the battle.

ACT I: 3. Breed’s Hill
Difficulty: Hard

This mission is relatively tough.  You need to hold the Redoubt for 20 minutes.  When you start out, send one village to the coast and build a dock.  (See Screenshot 03-01.)  You need to defend your island with battle boats, or there is no other way of stopping the British soldiers from taking the Redoubt.

You need a strong economy to finance the war.  So use the market and update technologies.  Don't produce canoes yet.  You want to advance to the Fortress Age (III) as soon as possible.  So you need to keep resources without producing canoes.

Use the group of villagers to the right to a silver mine.  (See Screenshot 03-02.)  And let other villagers hunt animals and cut trees.  Send the group of troops inside the Redoubt to the southern coast.  (See Screenshot 03-04.)  You will be told not to let them leave the fence.  But if you let them stay inside the fence, you will lose.

Screenshot 03-01

Before or right after you reach the Fortress Age, the first British ship will arrive.  Counter the British soldiers with your troops and canoes.  Before the ship shows up for the third time, generate 5 Colonial Militia men or Tomahawk warriors to each cannon.  (See Screenshot 03-05.)  If they capture either cannon, you are likely to lose.

They will use mainly three sites to land the island.  (See Screenshot 03-06.)  Defend Landing site 1 and 3 by using battle ships to stop the British vessels to reach the coast.  Defend Landing site 2 with your foot soldiers and war canoes.  Until you reach the Fortress Age, you need to use canoes and foot soldiers to kill British soldiers.  After reaching the Fortress Age, let villagers mostly collect wood and gold so that you can generate war canoes.  Use the hot key (Command + D) to locate the dock.  Put multiple war canoes in the production queue and set a gathering point.  Make as many war canoes (W) as allowed.  Use war canoes to block Landing site 1 & 3 so that the cannons will shoot and sink enemy vessels down.  (See Screenshot 03-09.)  Don't let your foot soldiers come too close the coast, or the British ship will shoot them.  If you reach the maximum number of war canoes to create, produce canoes. You can still use canoes to block the British ships from reaching the island.

ACT I: 4. Crossing the Delaware
Difficulty: Easy

This mission is quite easy because it's not really a real-time mission till the end.   That means you can take as much time as you need to complete tasks.  First, you will just have to cross the river to reach the Hessian tents.  There is no time constraint.  So you may want to explore the map around the British/Hessian base.

You are ordered to destroy all 10 Hessian tents.  There are some guards who patrol this area.  And they will throw grenades.  So you have to be careful.  As long as none of your troops die, they can get injured.  You will soon have a unit that can heal injuries.  While destroying tents one by one, you may want to get Nathaniel to use his sniper shot and take out the guards one by one.  (See Screenshot 04-04.)

There are a few tents located by watch towers.  Use George Washington or Nathaniel Black to get their attention first so that other troops can attack the watch tower.  (See Screenshot 04-05.)

Age of Empires III: The WarChiefs for Mac

Screenshot 04-01

After destroying all the tents, you need to have Nathaniel Black create 2 campfires.  And you will have one ship load of Colonial Militia with a surgeon.  (See Screenshot 04-06.)  Heal injuries.  Then you need to get your troops head northeast to kill a group of British soldiers.  (See Screenshot 04-07.)

Now, the British base is yours.  (See Screenshot 04-08.)  You need to build up your military and invade their base to the southwest.  You have already advanced to the Fortress Age (III).  So just create a market and get technologies.  (See Screenshot 04-09.)  If you wait too long, the Hessian will come to your base with artilleries.  So get ready and attack their base.  Build a siege workshop and produce 4 artilleries or more.

After killing the British soldiers (See Screenshot 04-10.), don't rush to destroy their headquarters.  The Hessians have several artilleries.  Again, while Washington or Black turns the Hessian artilleries away from the rest of your troops, destroy them one by one just with artilleries.  (See Screenshot 04-11 & 04-12.)  After destroying their artilleries, back up a little bit and wait for reinforcements while destroying British compounds.  You don't want to rush now and attack the British town center because the combination of British and Hessian soldiers will still outnumber your troops.  While attacking their buildings, British soldiers will come out to attack you.  (See Screenshot 04-13.)  So let all red military units come out.  Then you can destroy their military compounds along with the Hessian soldiers.  When you destroy the British Capitol building (General Conrwallis), the mission is accomplished.

ACT I: 5. Saratoga
Difficulty: Easy

You have British (Orange) and German (Green) armies in this map.  Your objective is to build 3 fortresses before the British do the same.  A British fort wagon occasionally passes along the path.  So you need to stop it.  Their fort wagon may be escorted by foot soldiers and artilleries.  So you have to be careful.

The following is just one way of achieving the goal.  Instead of building a base at south, I would rather take everything that I have and move along the path all the way and invade the British territory.

When you start out, you may want to head south and destroy the British trading post.  (See Screenshot 05-03.)  When your reinforcements arrive, get the villagers to cut wood so that Nathaniel Black can build a trading post of his own along the way.  (See Screenshot 05-02.)  And you will get free resources periodically, I suppose.

Age of Empires III: The WarChiefs for Mac

Screenshot 05-01

After destroying the first trading post, move along the path.  There's a small base with houses and and barrack to the right.  An orange British army will come soon.  So destroy the base and then attack them.  (See Screenshot 05-04.)  Across the small river, there is a small red British army with a Falconet stationed around a watch tower.  (See Screenshot 05-06 & 05-07.)  So use your artilleries to take out their Falconet.

Move along, and you will run into another trading post around the corner.  (See Screenshot 05-08.)  Deeper into the field, there are a couple of British (Orange) buildings and a silver mine, which you can use later on.  (See Screenshot 05-09.)

Move ahead along the path after killing red British troops.  There's a third trading post.  (See Screenshot 05-10.)  Right at the center of the map, there is a British (Orange) base.  It's almost empty.  This is where you want to build your base.  (See Screenshot 05-11.)  To the left, there is a gate and the British have military compounds.  But they won't bring large forces at a time.  When you build up your military, of course, you should strike them.  (See Screenshot 05-13.)  A nice thing about this area is that there are a couple of silver mines side by side, and there are several deer that your villagers can hunt for food.

At about a time after destroying the third trading post, you will get a secondary objective.  In order to complete it, you need to use the cards to bring military reinforcements from Home City.

A British fort cart will pass by occasionally.  So you have to stop it at all costs.  Always attack their falconets with yours at first.  You should build your fortresses near the carriage path so that you can easily cook British fort wagons.

ACT I: 6. Valley Forge
Difficulty: Easy

The first task is to collect a sufficient amount of wood to build 10 houses.  You have George Washington, Nathaniel Black and 8 Colonial Militia.  Colonial Militia can build houses and cut trees.  But they cannot open crates.

At the beginning, go up north and locate 3 black bears.  (See Screenshot 06-02.)  Save a settler, who can open crates.  (See Screenshot 06-03.)  He can stay under this cold weather unlike other units.  There are some crates by the location where he was found.  Use George Washington or Nathaniel Black to find crates so that the settler can open them for food, wood and coins.  Colonial Militia will die under this cold weather, and Washington and Black will faint but will not die.  Anyway, you need to bring them to a campfire before they die or faint.

Explore the map and find crates.  As soon as you find crates, send the setter only. At this moment, you only need wood, but you can use food soon.  So open all crates that you find.  If you take Black to the west, you will find several crates around a warehouse.  (See Screenshot 06-08.)  The British army patrol the whole area.  So you have to keep an eye on the mini map for red dots.  If you move along the river, you can find some crates as well as a lost wagon driver.  (See Screenshot 06-11.)

Age of Empires III: The WarChiefs for Mac

Screenshot 06-01

Take all men to the north point, and you will find a British watch tower.  (See Screenshot 06-12.)  There are some more Colonial Militia of yours hidden behind it.  (See Screenshot 06-14.)  Let Black or Washington take shots while other men can attack the tower.

After building 10 houses, you will get a next objective.  Now, you have to collect 3,000 units of food.  If you have opened all the crates that you have found, you should have 2,500 or more units of food.  By this time, the winter blizzard will die down.

When you achieve the food goal, a wagon will arrive.  (See Screenshot 06-17.)  It will let you build a town center.  So you can take it anywhere and start a base.  It doesn't matter where, but I actually took it all the way near the British base where there are a couple of barracks.  It's nice to have two silver mines side by side.  (See Screenshot 06-22.)  By taking villagers all along, you wouldn't have to defend your base while your military is gone to destroy the British fortress.

Their fortress is surrounded by watch towers.  So you may want to create several artilleries.

ACT I: 7. The Battle of Morristown
Difficulty: Hard

This mission is not terribly difficult to complete.  But once Kuechler is on the move, the clock starts ticking.  And you have to advance counter-clockwise around the center of the map and destroy his bases before they seize Morristown.

Don't stay at the base to build your army too long, or the base will be raided by cavalry.  You have to raid their base ahead as soon as you are ready.  Build a war hut and create several foot soldiers.  It will be a good idea to use a few cards to bring some soldiers from Home City.  There are several watch towers.  (See Screenshot 07-01.)  So be careful.  You have several stealth units, which you want to use to scout the area ahead before bringing in the entire military.  You have sufficient time to build your economy at least until you find a prison.

After saving an Iroquois prisoner, he will tell you that the main Hessian base is located at forther north.  (See Screenshot 07-05.)  He will also tell you about a secret passage across the river.  There is a gate across the river.  (See Screenshot 07-06.)  And there's a watch tower across the gate.  Before you move to the east, create several Colonial Militia because your base may be raided by several Hessian soldiers.  (See Screenshot 07-07.)  After destroying the gate, their cavalry army will arrive.  So protect your artilleries with foot soldiers.

Age of Empires III: The WarChiefs for Mac

Screenshot 07-01

After destroying their fortress, back up a little and destroy a gate.  (See Screenshot 07-08.)    There should be several miners guarded by a barrack and a watch tower.  (See Screenshot 07-09.)   Destroy them with artilleries.  Take several foot soldiers with them because there can be several soldiers coming out of the barrack.

You have a large vacant area.  Bring villagers and let them mine silver, hunt animals and cut trees.  Also, build a couple of military compounds.

Across the river, there's a military compound guarded by a watch tower.  And there are many soldiers and cavalry.  (See Screenshot 07-10.)  When you enter this area, there are a couple of town centers.  (See Screenshot 07-11.)  Concentrate on military compounds, town centers and watch towers, and destroy them.  Forget about their houses, or you will run out of time.  When George Washington gives you several cavalry, it's an indication that Morristown is about to fall.  Across the gate, there are 3 or 4 military compounds guarded by one or two watch powers.  Only destroy watch towers.  And send everything you have to Morristown.  They should have several artilleries attacking a town center in Morristown.  So you have to counter them with your artilleries.  (See Screenshot 07-12.)  In the meantime, generate 2 x 5 Colonial Militia and send them to the area with several military compounds by setting a gathering point.

ACT I: 8. The Battle of Yorktown
Difficulty: Easy

When you start out, you will be approached by several British soldiers across the river.  (See Screenshot 08-01.)  Kill them.  There's a watch tower ahead.  But don't rush.  Move your military back, leave the artilleries and explore the area to the south.  As long as you don't cross the river, the British won't bother you.  There are a couple of Aztec warriors captured by bandits.  (See Screenshot 08-02.)  There is also one Iroquois Tomahawk man guarded by wolves.  (See Screenshot 08-03.)  You can use them as your military is fairly small.

Now, you can attack their watch towers.  If you cross the river, the clock will start ticking.  And they will send two groups of troops with artilleries.  After destroying the 2nd watch tower, supplies will arrive.  (See Screenshot 08-07.)  And you can build a town center.  Well, instead of moving back, you can build your base right at the site where you are.

Age of Empires III: The WarChiefs for Mac

Screenshot 08-01

There is a cannon across the river that belongs to the British.  If you start here and advance quickly, you can win very easily.  There are animals to hunt and wood to cut.  And there are 3 silver mines.  You may want to use 3 or 4 cards to bring troops from Home City so that you can strike the British army while their economy is weak.  If they arrive, locate their artilleries and strike them with yours.  Then they will be easily finished.

After defeating their military, cross the river with Black or Washington.  (See Screenshot 08-11.)  There's a cannon ahead.  You know what to do.  Move your lure right to left quickly to make the cannon swing.  And strike it with your artilleries.

Head northeast.  And they will bring another military with artilleries.  If you defeat them, the game is pretty much over because their economy is too weak to strike you again.
