Final Cut Pro Questions and Answers

The following Final Cut Pro questions are mostly picked from Apple Discussions > Final Cut Studio > Final Cut Pro.  The corresponding solutions are written on our own.

If you have questions or comments, you may post them here.

Question 001: How do I cut a clip into two subclips?

Final Cut Pro FAQ

Possible solution: Select the track where the clip you want to edit is placed under the Timeline window.  Move the play head to the frame where you want to make a cut.  Then press Control + V or choose Add Edit under Sequence on the menu bar.

Question 002: I manually uninstalled Final Cut Pro 6.  Then I'm trying to reinstall it.  But the Final Cut Studio installer says that I already have Final Cut Pro installed.  How do I reinstall it?

Possible solution: Under the main Library folder, there is a folder labeled Receipts.  Inside this folder, there is a file named FinalCutPro.pkg.  The Final Cut Studio installer first checks if there are receipt files inside this folder.  If there are, the installer won't let you install corresponding applications.  If you have trashed the application icon for Final Cut Pro and associated files, you also need to trash this receipt file.  The same procedure applies to other Final Cut Studio components.

Question 003: Does Final Cut Pro read MPEG and VOB files?

Possible solution: Depending on the version of your Final Cut Pro, it may.  Final Cut Pro 5 or lower doesn't.  But Final Cut Pro 6 reads both MPEG and VOB files.  However, it doesn't decode AC3 audio.  So if your video clip contains audio compressed with AC3, you will have no audio.  If that's the case, you need to demux your video file into M2V and AC3 and then convert the audio stream into AIF.  Final Cut Pro also reads M2V files.

Question 004: How can I blur a specific area of a clip?

Final Cut Pro FAQ

Possible solution: Place the original clip in one track, and get a duplicate copy above the original clip.  Then use one of mattes like Mask Shape and a blurring filter under Video Filters.  You may want to watch this video tutorial for more information.  (Sorry, members only)

Question 005: I want to edit a clip by making cuts at several frames under the Viewer.  But there is little space between frames.  So I cannot get to the appropriate frame.  How can I?

Final Cut Pro FAQ

Possible solution: Unless you want to set keyframes, you should edit your clip by making cuts under the Timeline window.  If necessary, click on the appropriate size of Toggle Timeline Track Height at the bottom left corner of the Timeline window.  You can also widen space between frames by manipulating the size of the buttom scroll bar.

Question 006: I'm trying to import some MP3 songs that I bought at iTunes Store to Final Cut Pro.  But Final Cut Pro rejects them.  What's going on?

Final Cut Pro FAQ

Possible solution: That's probably because of Apple's DRM (digital rights management) algorithm.  If that's the case, you aren't perhaps supposed to.

Question 007: I imported an Adobe Photoshop file to Final Cut Pro.  But Final Cut Pro doesn't recognize its alpha channel.  What am I doing wrong?

Final Cut Pro FAQ

Possible solution: Try selecting the command Straight under Modify and Alpha Type.  (See Figure 7-2.)

Question 008: The current version of my Final Cut Pro is 5.0.4.  What are new features of Final Cut Pro 6?  Should I upgrade mine to 6?

Possible solution: One noticeable departure of Final Cut Pro from the last version is that Final Cut Pro now reads MPEG files.  It even reads VOB files.

Question 009: I have video files with a .M2T extension.  I want to edit them, but Final Cut Pro doesn't read these files.

Final Cut Pro FAQ

Possible solution: The HDV compression (.m2t) consists of MPEG-2 video and MPEG-1 Audio Layer II.  So you need to demultiplex each video file into an M2V video file and an audio stream.  Squared 5's MPEG Streamclip will help you demux your files.  Depending on the version, you can directly read M2V files with Final Cut Pro.  Search our weblog for more information on HDV if you like.

Question 010: I'm using Motion 3.  I want to insert a timer at a corner of the video.

Final Cut Pro FAQ

Possible solution: Complete your Motion project.  Then import the Motion file to Final Cut Pro.  And you can use Timecode Generator under Final Cut Pro to insert a timer.

Question 011: Is it true that Final Cut Pro cannot read VOB files?

Final Cut Pro FAQ

Possible solution: That's not necessarily true.  Final Cut Pro 5 doesn't read MPEG or VOB files.  But Final Cut Pro 6 supports open formats through which you can import M2V, MPEG and VOB files.  But Final Cut Pro 6 will not import the audio stream(s) of a multiplexed video file.  Therefore, you need to demux the VOB file into M2V and AIFF and import them separately to Final Cut Pro.  And Final Cut Pro 5 (at least 5.0.4 and higher) also reads M2V files as well.

Question 012: I want to edit some of the frames in a video file individually before importing it to Final Cut.  Which application can I use?

Final Cut Pro FAQ

Possible solution: That depends on the media format.  If you want to work on a QuickTime file, you can use Adobe Photoshop CS2's ImageReady.  The same function is available under Photoshop CS3, I suppose.  But I'm not so sure.

Question 013: How do export a Final Cut Pro project to Flash (FLV)?

Final Cut Pro FAQ

Possible solution: In order to export a project to Flash in Final Cut Pro, you must have a Flash compressor.  If you have one, you should find it inside Library > QuickTime.  It's a QuickTime component.  Adobe and Sorenson Media offers commercial Flash compressors.

First, select a sequence and choose Batch Export under File.  Then right-button-click on the sequence and choose Flash Video (FLV).  If you do have a Flash compressor, then you should see a screen as shown in Figure 13-2.  And you will get to choose which encoder to use if you have more than one Flash encoders.
