Installing and uninstalling bkBrowser

Please read the README file that comes with the application.

Using bkBrowser

A. Making a bookmark

When you first launch bkBrowser, you should see an application window with three frames.  The one to the left lists bookmark folders.  There's another list at the bottom of the window.  This list shows all bookmarks you have created.  And the large frame right above the bottom list shows bookmark snapshots for the selected bookmark folder.  That is, the Catalogue Window alters its collection of thumbnails, depending on which bookmark folder is selected.

The first thing you want to do after launching bkBrowser for the first time is create a bookmark folder.  The bookmark folder lets you classify booksmarks into a different category.  Click on the Create button on the Toolbar menu at the top to create a new one.  All you have to do is name a folder.  Then click on the create button.  And you should see a bookmark folder with the same name in the list to the left.

You are now all set to create the first bookmark.  Next, launch a web browser.  You can use any web browser including Apple's Safari, Mozilla's Firefox and Camino as long as the web browser supports drag-and-drop URL text.

Now, access a webpage you want to bookmark with your web browser.  Click in the URL box and drag the fav icon or the entire URL text towards bkBrowser.  And finally drop this URL text onto bkBrowser's drop box.  By your doing so, the Mouse pointer will transform itself into a camera icon, which will lets you select any of the open windows, not just that of a web browser.  Now, click on the web browser once.  And wait for bkBrowser to spring up a small window.  This window should show you the exact URL from your web browser with a resized snapshot of the current web page aside.  If the URL is what you want to bookmark, then press the Return key or click on the Create button.  And you have successfully made the first bookmark with bkBrowser.  If you have more than one bookmark folders, then select the last one.  And you should see a thumbnail of the webpage from your web browser in the Catalogue Window.

Let's see what has just happened.  You took a snapshot of a webpage.  Its thumbnail is shown in the Catalogue Window as long as the right bookmark folder is selected.  If you click on this thumbnail, its URL profile will be selected in the Bookmark Profile List at the bottom.  You can double-click on the selected bookmark profile or any of them in the list to access the URL in question with the default web browser set by your system.

Furthermore, if you Inspector checkbox on, then bkBrowser should display a small window to the right.  WhoIs Inspector may show nameserver information on the selected URL at the top and domain information at the bottom if the domain in question has a top-level name of any of the following.

  1. .com
  2. .edu
  3. .net
  4. .org

bkBrowser is not perfect and will never be.  It doesn't necessarily cover all domains with those top-level names.  And no domain with a country TLD is covered.  For example, if you have a URL like http://www.machouse.com.cn/machouse.html.  This URL contains a country top-level name (cn).  And bkBrowser won't give you nameserver information or domain information for it.

Furthermore, since bkBrowser accesses Internic's Whois server for domain information, if their data is wrong, then bkBrowser will show you the same wrong domain information.  If bkBrowser gets wrong information on a particular domain from Internic, bkBrowser is certainly not to blame.  In fact, their database server gets attacked once in a while.  Internic is the sole organization that collects information on all domains in the world.  And there is nothing else.  Click here for more information on Internic and security.

By the way, the default snapshot format is JPEG.  Every time you take a snapshot of a webpage, bkBrowser makes a copy and stores it in its folder.  If you cancel the operation by pressing the Escape key, then bkBrowser will send the snapshot file to Trash.  (Click here for more information.)

If you want to change the default snapshot format, open Preferences.  Set the tab to Settings.  And choose one of nine graphic formats.  Under this tab, you can also decide whether to open Whois Inspector every time you click on the bookmark profile on the Bookmark Profile List.

B. Snapshot

Snapshot lets you take a snapshot of the current webpage displayed on a web browser beautifully and save it anywhere on your computer (as long as the destination is visible).  If you click on the Snapshot button on the Toolbar menu, a small window will spring up itself.  Select a destination where to save a snapshot by clicking on the Select button.  Then choose a graphic format of your choice.  If you want to open a folder or the volume at the destination after bkBrowser takes a snapshot, then enable Show screenshot.

Finally, if you are ready to take a snapshot of the current webpage on a web browser, click on the Start button.  Again, the Mouse pointer will transform itself into a camera icon.  So click on a web browser.  And?  If you enabled Show screenshot, then you should find an image file in the folder that has just popped up.  That's quite easy, right?
