A-Cownts

Mac Windows freeware A-Cownts

A-Cownts is a new and first application that MacHouse has developed.  What is it?  A-Cownts offers you a quick way of saving and maintaining accounts.  And it's a freeware title for both Mac and Windows users.

We really like a shareware title called PasswordMaster which also allows users to store accounts.  But it's old, and nobody maintains it any more.  It's not in Universal Binary.  There are a lot of minor problems, too, like no support for the contextual menu and 2-byte characters like Chinese and Japanese...

A-Cownts works just like PasswordMaster.  This freeware version comes with three built-in tabs under which you can store accounts for different purposes.  Of course, you can customize tab labels quick and easy.

A-Cownts stores every single piece of information in a single file labeled acownts.acw, which can be easily crack-opened with text-editors including TextEdit.  But that doesn't mean data are human-readable.  A-Cownts uses an encryption method with a key that has 2.078218990239605e+63 different combinations, which means it is impossible for anyone to decrypt data in their lifetime and next.  Also, A-Cownts lets you set a login password so that nobody else can open and see your account list.

When you register one account after another, you know what you get tired of doing?  Coming up with random passwords...  A-Cownts comes with a built-in function called Dice.  Dice lets you create random passwords containing up to 99 characters.  It supports numbers, upper and lower case alphabetic letters, special characters and Greek letters.

Version History:

1.1.4 to 1.1.5 (January 4, 2009)

  1. Fix: The application could be put into an infinite loop if the user chose Numbers (0-9) only and checked the box for No number at the beginning at the same time to throw dice.
  2. A few minor fixes are made.

1.1.3 to 1.1.4 (September 10, 2009)

This update will not necessarily benefit all users of A-Cownts especially if they are sufficiently content with this freeware title.  This update will make A-Cownts compatible with OrganizeX Lite, a successor of A-Cownts and a freeware title that allows users to create an unlimited number of web accounts, software license profiles and credit card profiles and record credit card transactions.  See Download OrganizeX Lite under A-Cownts.  Read OrganizeX's User's Guide for how to import A-Cownts' data file to OrganizeX.  Note that we have no plans for making OrganizeX Lite available for Windows for now.

1.1.2 to 1.1.3 (August 21, 2009)

  1. Users can change the location where the main application window and others appear.  (See under System in Preferences)
  2. Users are given an option of running the update notification function upon startup.  (See under System in Preferences)
  3. The Dice window now appears right next to the main application window.

1.1.1 to 1.1.2 (August 10, 2009)

  1. A-Cownts now supports an update notification feature.  See under the A-Cownts menu.
  2. Complying with a request by a user, the gain of login audio is lowered.

1.1.0b to 1.1.1 (August 6, 2009)

  1. An account orphan is an existing account that cannot be deleted or modified.  An account orphan is most likely to occur when the user creates an account without a username.  With this upgrade, all accounts that have been created since Version 1.0.3 can be accessed, deleted and modified.
  2. A better document icon

1.1.0a to 1.1.0b (July 16, 2009)

  1. A-Cownts now comes with a seemingly better-looking icon and a new log-in audio clip.

1.1.0 to 1.1.0a (July 15, 2009)

  1. An insignificant fix for putting the label of the copy button on Dice back

1.0.7 to 1.1.0 (July 14, 2009)

  1. Improvement: One can now change the appearance order of input boxes.  Open Preferences and switch tabs to Labels.  Select a label name.  Then press and hold down the left button and move the label name up and down.

  1. Improvement: Assuming that you have set a system password with the 'Log in upon launching A-Cownts' option, clicking on the protect button will require you to enter your password.  In this way, you can protect your data (passwords) from strangers while you are away from your computer.  A-Cownts will remember the protect/unprotect setting even the application shut.
  2. Improvement: Clicking on the Notes popup button will spring up a large window for Notes.

  1. Fixed is a minor bug that might cause A-Cownts not to create a default data set.
